If your Security Center icon in taskbar has a yellow exclamation mark warning or even red circle with cross warning for several minutes after every system restart just because Security Center is trying to figure out what’s the status of your protection software (even when only using Windows Defender!) and goes away after that really long time, this fix will most likely resolve it for you. I don’t know why this nonsense started happening all of a sudden and why it’s happening with all antiviruses except avast!, but I found out the reason.
Windows Security Center service is set for Automatic start with Delay. Which means it takes forever to load on startup and as a result, you see that warning on the taskbar icon forever.
Applying my fix (simple registry file) however forces Security Center to start in a normal, non delayed way which refreshes the status instantly on every system restart, showing green checkmark next to a Security Center shield pretty much instantly. It doesn’t really affect performance or startup time, but it gets rid of the warning/error icon on Security Center, so you instantly know whether there is an actual problem with protection because you’ll get the actual status instantly after startup.
Update 2018-08-12: Added additional REG file to restore default state
Apparently there is a huge problem with game “Exodus from the Earth” on Steam. I bought this game ages ago, but never had time to play it. Till this Christmas when I finally had time and will to play and then the game crapped out. Every single time I tried to run it, I’ve instantly got “Failed to start the game (unknown error)” message and that was it. Reinstalled the game, tried cleaning the appcache, deleted the blob thingie, nothing. Then I started poking at the game executable directly and there I’ve noticed it was a side-by-side issue with the executable. Such errors are common when system lacks Microsoft Visual C+/C++ runtime libraries. In case of Exodus from the Earth game, it was MSVC 2005 (v8.0). Digged out the installers and guess what, the game started!
Apparently Windows doesn’t come with these libraries out of the box and Steam doesn’t seem to care about the fact that you don’t have this MSVC 2005 installed. Game also doesn’t give any obvious errors. Like let’s say, telling the user the system doesn’t have friggin’ MSVC 2005 installed. I mean like wtf… Anyway…
Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 (v8.0) x86 download:
Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 (v8.0) x64 download:
Install both on 64bit systems or just the x86 on 32bit systems. This should make the game run again.
To solve the problem with settings getting ignored, go to game folder:
.\Valve\Steam\steamapps\common\Exodus from the Earth\bin
Right click on “efte.exe” file and select “Properties”. Select “Compatibility” tab and enable “Run this program as an administrator” and hit Ok to get out of the menu. You can from now on run the game through Steam directly, Windows will ask you for admin rights with the UAC popup and after that, applying settings should work without any problems. At least it did for me.
Hopefully this will help everyone to be able to run this game again 🙂
