Apple’s new Sleep tracking app is pretty much useless

I’ve been waiting for native sleep tracking feature in iOS and on Apple Watch with excitement. Usually Apple makes things simple and still functional. Well, they kinda cocked it up to a point sleep tracking is just useless for me.

The weirdest part of it all is that despite all these sensors available, it’s really dumb system. First you have to define your bed time, wake up time and with that, total sleep time. If you can have a fixed sleep time anyways. I don’t and I realized how broken the app is when I had to wake up at 6:30 using my own alarm even though I had wake up time for Sleep tracking set at 8:00. I was literally at work already, fully awake and watch goes like “oh hey, it’s 8:00, time to wake up!” with a gentle alarm. After checking the sleep data, the app thought I was in bed and awake almost up to 8:00… Lets just say I was awake for hour and a half already and not even in bed, I was standing up and moving around…

What I don’t understand here is the fact I had some cheap Chinese sport band for 20€ that tracked my sleep fully automatically and was actually incredibly accurate at it. Without any bed time and wake up time, it detected when I went to bed and when I woke up, detected when I had restless night, detected when I woke up during night to take a leak or whatever and even detected sleeping when I took a nap in middle of the day. And same was actually on Apple Watch when I was using 3rd party sleep tracking app. No configuration and it tracked my sleeping perfectly using just sensors in Apple Watch. But Apple’s own app, you have to predefine things that also force stupid alarm on you and ends up being totally off when it comes to actually tracking things. And yes, I have enabled for Apple Watch to track my sleep, not just iPhone.

It’s just so useless I just turned it off and won’t bother with it until Apple makes it better. I just want it to fully automatically track my sleeping, no matter when I go to sleep or when I wake up. Other watches and apps could do it, why the hell can’t Apple’s own?!
