Windows 10 language settings nightmare

I can’t believe this is going on for this long and Microsoft still hasn’t fixed or improved any of it. I can remember going as far back as initial Windows 8 releases that had these problems and we’re deep into Windows 10 product line and it’s still an absolute mess.

Let me just explain what I mean… literally from beginning.

Do you remember how Windows 10 asks you what language of Windows you want to install, what region you are in and what keyboard language you want to use, right there in first screen of the installer? And how it just forgets it all and then turns what you’ve picked into a total mishmash of moronic nonsense later on? Yeah, that one.

I’m from Slovenia, but I like software in English because tech terminology in my language is just terrible. It just sounds weird and all words are usually way longer than original English terms so I just prefer to stick with English.

I set my Windows (interface) to be in English US, my regional settings are set to Slovenia which sets time into 24 hour format, date is ordered correctly and uses periods instead of slash as separators, as well as bunch of other things specific to our region that don’t line up with US ones like how Monday is a starting day of week and not bloody Sunday. And of course keyboard in Slovenian language because we have special characters like “čšž” which are not found in English language.

And what is the end result of these settings?

Windows interface is indeed in English, but even though I’ve picked Slovenia in Regional settings, it just slams US time and date formatting on top coz fuck you user, your regional settings mean nothing to me! So I manually have to set region to Slovenia. Which, for some dumb reason forces Windows to localize Windows apps like Calculator, MS Paint and stuff. So I end up having most of Windows interface in English with those apps in my native language which just looks absolutely horrible. It also localizes Windows Store for some reason, so I hate using it even more. What an absolute clusterfuck.

And things don’t stop there, no no no, because I want interface in English, it just assumes I also want fuck ton of keyboard layouts as well. I then have English US, English UK and Slovenian layouts. And when I remove all of them except Slovenian, it still just auto assumes I need English US one so it’s just there in Language bar whether I want it or not. Which always spawns that god damn language bar next to clock with English US and Slovenian language every time I run any Valve game for some reason as well as with bunch of other apps and then you can’t get rid of the stupid Language bar thing. And you set it to Hidden in settings and the fucking thing just wouldn’t go away. Which part of HIDDEN don’t you understand there Windows?

Like, for fucks sake Microsoft, how god damn hard can it be? You literally ask me about these parameters during Windows install and you can’t fucking obey them properly? It’s just 3 (THREE!) parameters.

  • Windows interface language (Which I want in English US, including Windows apps and Windows Store)
  • Regional settings (Slovenia, so it’s Monday for start of the week, 24h time formatting and 18.04.2020 date)
  • Keyboard settings (Slovenian and just this, if I don’t set any other keyboard, stop assuming shit and showing me English US layout anyway)

How hard can it be? When I set these things, fucking obey them and stop assuming things and enabling things. And stop just changing and rearranging others when I adjust some of them. Because as you are configuring these 3 segments, they change things in other segments of these 3 settings. It’s an absolute nightmare to adjust this stuff and have a reliable and consistent experience.

I can’t possibly be the only one who wants English US interface and Windows apps while using non-US regional settings and keyboard. Is everyone else really just US users or non-US users who just use their fully localized Windows? I can’t seem to think of any other explanation why I’m seeing all these absurd problems and inconsistencies and they aren’t a global problem somehow. It’s not a complicated thing to ask for. Just obey the damn settings I set and it would be fine. But that’s just not the case. And I have to deal with this crap on every Windows reinstall for years. Just fix this shit already Microsoft, god damn.
