John Carmack left id Software

It seems like November is the time for all the black, dark and bad stuff to happen. First the Winamp was killed and now the news of John Carmack leaving id Software. If you’re too young to know who he is, John Carmack was the mastermind behind the most advanced game graphics engines that were fueling legendary games like Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, Quake, which were of course developed by id Software, but their engines also landed in many many games from other developers. Half-Life 1 was running on heavily modified Quake 2 engine, Soldier of Fortune was also running on hugely modified Quake 2 engine and during the Quake 3 Arena era, even more games were running on their stuff. Mostly the most epic games ever, Star Trek Elite Force 1 and 2, Star Wars Jedi Knight II Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, the insane and twisted American McGee’s Alice and Heavy Metal FAKK2. Oh, did I mention Call of Duty was running on this modified engine as well? And Soldier of Fortune Double Helix? Those were the golden days really.

I think the reason behind this is absorption of id Software within Bethesda not that long ago. And even though I don’t know the exact reasons for Carmack’s decision, I can’t blame him. It’s not the first time a founder or a key person leaving the original company after it was acquired or taken over by someone else.

I’m still his huge fan and I have loads of respect for him. There are very few people who have done so much for gaming industry as he did with his incredible game engines.

Looking forward on seeing his new creations, either under his (possibly) new company or under some other software studio.
